In 1957, I was traveling on the Newfie Bullet from Notre Dame Junction to Whitbourne.  Seated across from me was a young mother with her child, who appeared to me to be about a year old.  Shortly after the train started moving again, the baby began to cry, and cried for several minutes.  She un-buttoned her top, discretely covered herself ith the baby blanked, and tried to nurse the baby.  he talked to it:  “Come on, now, I know you must be hungry”, and other such comments.  Still the baby cried.  Soon the conductor appeared, obviously checking tickets.  Frustrated, the mother said to the baby,  “Come on, now.  Take it!  If you don’t, I’ll give it to the conductor”.

Perhaps the baby understood, for the crying stopped immediately!
