Allied Youth!
Well the location for the Story is the Southern Shore.
Oh Yes,I am trying to stay grounded in the Present.
How is that working out for ya? I cheekily ask in the 3rd person.
Oh Yeah,I forgot. It is better to do it and beg forgiveness later
in most Cases don’t you know.
The Story I am here to tell you is based in the Mid 70’s
which most of them are.The Nuns liked to ask me to
Volunteer for Groups that were about Speaking and discussions.
Might have something to do with having a few relatives in the Convent.
Not sure if their was a Connection. They liked to pick me to join their new
Clubs.
One such Club was Allied Youth with a focus on keeping Teens away
from Drugs and Alcohol.Which did not work.
This was my first memory with a bout of anxiety that I recall.
I did not have a label for it back then.
The School Bus was to pick us up on Saturday Morning
and take us to Ferry land for a Allied Youth Conference.
When I woke up,Their was no way Buddy that I was going to that
nonsense and missing a good Sleep.Don’t interrupt an O’Brien from Sleeping.
The late Mister Richard our Bus Driver Stopped at our Lane and sent a Student up to our house.
Mister Richard says he will wait for you to get dressed. Not even sure if I thanked the
Man and Off we go.As a Teen we were just discovering Beer and Weed.Of course the Weed was not Strong back then.Good for a laugh.Had a few draws and a couple of
beers during lunch break behind the Million Dollar View Restaurant.Wally Ann said
Careful a Big Sea might come in and drown ye.We were close to the edge of the Cliff.
I recall going back to Class and it was a warm Sunny day.Rare for these Parts.
Once we got in Class with the Sun shining in.We had all to do to control a bad case of the Giggles.trying hard to be the Class Clown and failing badly.I remember usĀ splitting up in groups and discussing how other teens from the Shore were buying their Weed
You know constructive teen talk straying away from the Subject.
I recall the Guest Speaker was a Fisherman from the Shore by the name of
Mr. Conden. A very nice soft spoken man who told us about his trip to
the law of the Sea Conference in Caracas .Of course I had to make a fool
out of myself and inquire about using Helicopters to protect our 200 mile limit.
Only to learn our Armed Forces were using Trackers for that job already.
I don’t believe Helicopters had that kind of Range in those days.I know they do now.
I never heard of anymore Allied Youth after the one we had.I often wondered if
The Teachers said.It is a losing Battle. Not even sure if one day of lectures could
reach anybody to Choose to live a clean healthy life and abstain from the fires of Hell.
It was a good experience.Met a Couple of new friends that I later hung out with in the Bars.It intrigued me to know John Denver was a Supporter of Allied Youth.Who does not like Take Me Home Country Roads.I hear John struggled with his own demons.
I am finished rambling on for now.
Take Care my Lovelies!
