Why Me
A poem written by my sister for herself and me. We had both been in an abusive relationship for 14 and 15 years. We finally found ourselves. She's going on seven years, and I'm going on one. No small feat to overcome, but her strength and inspiration for me was so strong, and this poem she wrote for both of us.
Why Me
It's amazing that from the time of your birth.
Your life is planned upon this earth.
From the paths you'll take, to the time you'll die.
It cannot be changed, no need to try.
Some of us get dealt a raw deal!
Maybe not but that's how we feel!
We wonder "Why me."
Some people seem to have it all.
The perfect life, we like to call.
The perfect house, the perfect man.
One who provides and helps when they can.
Some of us end up with less of a guy.
Who won't work and couldn't care less.
They complain, they argue, they fight, they hit.
Going nowhere on the couch they sit.
We wonder "Why me."
They make you feel so down and low.
Like you'll never have anywhere to go.
No one will want you they always say.
They make you turn everyone else away.
Your children, brothers, sisters, and parents too.
You feel like you don't know what to do.
But no matter how bad it gets.
You pick yourself up, and take bigger steps.
Through years of abuse, they think they've won.
But inside you've been the stronger one.
As the years go by, you'll start to see.
I don't need him "He needs me."
You finally find the strength to get out.
He packs his things and starts to pout.
Thinking you'll feel sad and pity.
But inside you'll find you won't feel guilty.
As the door closes behind his head.
You wonder how you're still not dead.
The weight has been lifted off your shoulders.
Like you've gotten rid of 100 pound boulder.
The first few days you ask "Can I do it?"
Believe me you can you will get through it.
You'll be stronger, and happier, and begin to recover.
You'll get back your children, brothers, sisters,
Your father and mother.
You'll begin to see you're on the right track.
And now that you're there, there's no turning back.
The path that you took, was lonely and dark.
But now to see sunlight is only the start.
The real you will begin to shine through,
You didn't realize but we always knew.
So we'll enjoy whatever time we have left.
No cares, no worries and no regrets.
The path we have taken, may not have been the way.
But it made us the person we are today.
I finally know, "Why me."
For no stronger person will ever there be.
