Viking connection

Viking connection

I enjoyed reading the article in the March 2017 edition of the Downhome entitled The Ingstads and Other Vikings. I was born in Port aux Basques and my dad, Stanley Roberts Sr., worked on a farm near Port aux Basques in the 1930s. While doing some gardening he dug up a egg-shaped beach rock with a carved indentation (photo attached). He kept it in his tool box for years and I remember him telling me that he thought it was a native oil lamp. The stone has been in my possession now for the past 40 years. The article mentions an oil lamp being found at the L'Anse aux Meadows site on the Great Northern Peninsula. I have not see the oil lamp at L'Anse aux Meadows. Recently there has been some activity near Codroy, Newfoundland by a team led by Sarah Parcak who is investigating the possibility of another Viking site in that area. There was a TV program on Nova Scotia abut a year ago featuring her work using satellite technology. The program included a photo of an oil lamp also identical to my photo. Last summer, with the assistance of Mr. Andrew Parsons, the MHA for Port aux Basques, I was able to show the rock to some archaeologists at the Confederation Building. they classified the stone as a "modified cobble" and possibly maritime archaic. Given the location of the site at L'Anse aux Meadows, and the work by researchers near Codroy, I am left with the question as to whether or not the Vikings also actually lived further south in the Port aux Basques area and I have one of their oil lamps? I still have my dad's find and keep it hidden off my property. I will continue to treasure it and I thought your readers would enjoy hearing about it.   Submitted By: NULL
