This Ugly Lump
It seems we have a penchant
To act in a manner aberrant
In our treatment of our environment
Which we subject to gratuitous defilement
Nowhere is this more obvious
Then in home construction practice
Where trees are subject to destruction
As a prelude to the start of construction
After the site is thoroughly vandalized
The excavating machines materialize
To scoop out a hole for a basement
To continue with nature’s debasement
And when the concrete is finally ejected
Sometimes six feet above ground projected
Black tar will be applied with abandon
Covered presently with rigid insulation
Now atop this unsightly monument
Perches an edifice of dimensions exorbitant
Quite easily seen from the street
The massacre of the trees being complete
In turn each rock and each stump
Will be gathered and piled up in front
Over which sods will soon be applied
Reflecting the home owner’s pride
Now to decorate this ugly lump
He’ll plant a scraggly tree out front
Preferably one that’s imported
And with anchor lines firmly supported
Presently with a carbon spewing device
He’ll relax and have a beer while mowing the grass
Kentucky blue, as likely as not
As on the bank in his slippers, the mower he’ll hold fast
And, if he is lucky in twenty years time
With his health by now somewhat in decline,
He’ll sit under his tree on the lawn
And reminisce about life, and a big toe that is gone.
