Dear Downhome, This schooner was the Ruby L. M. Smith, usually shortened to The Ruby, owned by Captain Silas Tucker of St. Jones Within, Trinity Bay. Weighed down with 1,275 quintals of salt bulk fish below deck, all fishing gear, two motor boats and punt hoisted in on deck, it is returning from the fishing grounds of Labrador. From the Jigger Island-Cape Harrison area to home port was achieved in five days and nights, considered to be a record time. With an 85 H.P. Acadia engine and sails, hauling the log determined a speed of 12 knots. George Tucker went out to the jib-boom with a small Brownie camera and took this picture believed to be in 1947. Seen here are crew members (left to right) unidentified; Tom Jacobs, standing lookout back near the rigging; Harold Tucker, 13; Melvie Bishop (cook) and Edgar Holloway. Other crew were Hayward Jacobs, Ches Smith, Sam Holloway, Ches Brown and Hayward Tucker. Sadly, of the original eleven crew, only three remain today.
