The Four Elements in NL
The Four Elements in NL

Here is a beautiful poem in praise of NL. It was written by an old English poet Robert Hayman back in the 1600s.He was governor of NL from 1618 to 1628 and wrote extensively in praise of the colony. It was dedicated to Capt John Mason who governed NL wisely for a number of years before him. I have translated the poem from the Old English.

The four Elements in Newfoundland. To the Worshipful Captain John Mason, who did wisely and worthily govern there a number of years

The Air, in Newfoundland is wholesome, good;
The Fire, as sweet as any made of wood;
The Waters, very rich, both salt and fresh;
The Earth more rich, you know it is no less.
Where all are good, Fire, Water, Earth, and Air,
What man made of these four would not live there?

Robert Hayman

I thought it beautiful enough to post it here for all to see.

John Cornick
Halifax, Nova Scotia Submitted By: John Cornick
