Steam Cars in St. John’s
Steam Cars in St. John’s

Back in the early 1900s prior to the advancements in the internal combustion engine, steam cars were common and a number of companies in the US were producing them. One such company was the White Company, but the most famous was the Stanley Steamer. These cars were expensive and could only be afforded by the wealthy. They did appear in very limited numbers in St. John’s in the early 1900s, and one prominent resident, Sir Edgar Bowring, owned one. The picture shows a White automobile with Sir Edgar at the wheel accompanied by some lady passengers. The operation of these vehicles was fairly complicated and necessitated engaging a chauffeur, in this case Mr. Ned Rogers.

Photo credit: Fred Adams, St. John’s.
