St. John’s Street Cars
As a lad growing up in St. John’s in the early 1940s, just before the era of city busses I remember vividly the old street cars. They serviced only the main thoroughfares. They ran on tracks and were powered by electricity from overhead wires. The photo shows such a car, which somehow managed to get derailed on Water Street West. The power for these cars was supplied from a power plant located a short distance from St. John’s at Petty Harbour. This system was replaced shortly afterwards by a modern bus transit system.
