St. John’s Seasons
Winter
The city seemed to me to be
One with God and sleeping, neath
A blanket of eternal white
The snows of late December’s teeth
The winter's long they hung like frost
Amid the hustle and the race
The faces of the milling crowds
Were testaments to a dreary place
Day after day the gray clouds hung
O’re buildings drab in cluttered space
Smoke-laden mist swirled everywhere
Of sun and wind there was no trace
Spring
But then a warm and welcome air
Appeared from nowhere right on track
To cut the snow and green the grass
And sun and wind were welcomed back
And everywhere the pace was quickened
And faces heretofore forlorn
Assumed a bright and cherry note
Anticipation now was born
And smells of spring were everywhere
An end to winter’s dreary pace
And persons all seemed proud to be
A member of the human race
Summer
The days grow warm the nights mystique
And summer romance fills the air
And children’s songs reach high to heaven
In sweet abandon, free of care
The cityscape takes on an air
Of bright and fresh enlivenment
And buildings take unto themselves
The magic of the summer scent
And even rain in summer seems
To bring a sweetness and a calm
To wash away the cares of life
And leave us with a sense of balm
Fall
But come it will as sure as death
The lovely season must wind down
The luscious greens will, as they must
Give way to yellows, reds and browns
And in the air a sense of still
In silent preparation for
Impending onslaught of the cold
Dreary winter season soon in store
A time to batten down the hatches
To take in stock and fill the store
Again those faces will assume
An abject countenance full sore
Eulogy
Thus fair city of St. John’s
Your seasons march from year to year
From time memorial deeply etched
In heart and soul and mind so dear
Oh city of my childhood dreams
Forever in my heart endeared
Your charm and grace and sanctity
I carry with me through the years
