Sealing 1955
Sealing 1955

This photo was taken aboard a sealing vessel somewhere off the coast of Newfoundland during the Spring seal hunt of 1955. The top picture shows seal pelts being winched aboard the vessel and stored on the deck. The second picture shows three crew members standing on the deck; two stewards and the barrelman (centre). The job of the barrelman was to man the barrel high up on the mast to spot seal herds. These men were very proficient at their job and the success of the voyage often depended on their experience.

Photo courtesy the late Capt Lloyd Bugden of Topsail, NL

John Cornick
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Submitted By: John Cornick
