Pink, White and Green
Pink, White and Green
An old flag so often seen these days
The Pink, the White, the Green
Binds all religions together
And stirs in us a pride serene
But whence did this old tricolour come
Not known for sure they say
But legend has it that Bishop Fleming
United Protestant and Catholics by a flag that way
Back in eighteen forty three
Fierce rivalry between Catholic and Protestant sealers
Hauling loads of wood to fire furnaces
In respective cathedrals for St. John’s dealers
Prompted the Bishop to come up with a scheme
To harmonize relations and mellow the tone
By combining the colours of both the groups
In a flag that all could accept as their own
This tricolour flag of the Newfoundland Native Society
Back in the century mid nineteen
Was widely accepted at the time
As the Newfoundland flag with high esteem
Some say the flag of Ireland was based
On the tricolour of our old past record
Designed by Thomas Meagher the son
Of the NF-born Mayor of Waterford
But these are legends only
Not based in fact secure
But still the colours evoke in us
A pride of place for sure
Flying from every window
Fluttering there with pride
A symbol of past history
Taking it all in stride
It seems the young are into this
More so than are their elders
For them it is a pride of place
Fired up in the hearts of young gals and fellers
A need to state their place in things
With a symbol that wont relent
A rallying cry for a young generation
God bless their fine intent
But never the less the legend persists
Down to this very day
And go where you will on that fine Rock
A tricolour is proudly on display
