Old 1936 Auto
Old 1936 Auto
Back in the 1940s my Grandfather, Arthur Smith, who lived at 53 Hayward Ave in St Johns, owned a car. I believe it was a 1936 Plymouth. It was housed in a garage immediately behind his house and he treated it with tender loving care. Sometimes on weekends in the 1940s he would take us on drives around Conception Bay. Back in those days the rural roads were not paved and were often in terrible conditions. I remember distinctly that often, especially in the Holyrood area, he would have to place tree boughs under the car in order to pass through these areas. The attached photo, which I recently found in one of my parents old albums, shows my mother Olive Smith (L) and her sister Stella (R) standing beside grandfathers car.
