NLDRS in RAF
NLDRS in RAF

Many Newfoundlanders served in the Royal Air Force during WWII. They were attached to No. 125 (Newfoundland) Squadron stationed in England. They were charged with keeping the skies over Britain’s coast free of aerial invaders. Eric Martin Gosse of Spaniards Bay was part of the first draft of 52 Newfoundlanders that went to Canada in August 1940 in training to join the RAF. He received his wings in the early summer of 1941, along with Rex Tilley and Walter Vatcher. They served in the squadron from 1941 to 1945 as Flt. Lieutenants. Gosse was a family friend. The photo shows both Eric Gosse and Rex Tilley along with other Newfoundlanders including Mike Finn, Jack Reid, and Jim Crummey beside an aircraft in England during the winter of 1942-43.

Photo Credit: More Fighting Newfoundlanders, G.W.L.
