Joe's Retirement

Joe left his home at twenty-one,
And headed for the west,
He was going to make big money,
Just like all the rest.

First he bought a pick-up truck,
And some fancy clothes to wear,
But he always sent money home,
To prove that he could share.

He went back home once a year,
And spent a week or more,
Where he done odd jobs for his folks,
Or just to walk along the shore.

Well, Joe kept his job for years,
And a fine savings he did acquire,
All the while he was dreaming of,
Going home where he could retire.

His parents were getting up in years,
And they were waiting for his return
But a few days after Joe retired,
This sad news, they did learn.

The phone call told them Joe had died,
In an accident outside of town,
So now, instead of coming home to retire,
He would be buried beneath the ground.
