Navigating by Nuddicks <br /> <br /> A knuddick, nob, tolt or hill<br /> Call it what so ere you will<br /> So important to those fisher chaps<br /> In taking bearings to their traps<br /> <br /> Ore wide expanse with many a lop<br /> Oft made it hard to pinpoint the spot<br /> When heading out over open water<br /> To seek their traps in unknown quarter<br /> <br /> The shores surrounding our fair isle<br /> Are dotted with promontories for many a mile<br /> Familiar landmarks and we are told<br /> With names harkening back to days of old<br /> <br /> These were well known and that is for sure<br /> By many a fisher along our shore<br /> And by such use skippers Ned and Sam<br /> Arrived safe home despite gale or calm<br /> <br /> The names have been known down through the years<br /> By mothers who knew them oft associated with tears<br /> For on widows peaks they would spend many days<br /> As over the horizon for their men they would gaze<br /> <br /> The dangers of life on the open water<br /> Was constantly with them as causing much slaughter<br /> Their faith in the Almighty had to be strong<br /> To sustain them and keep in their hearts a brave song<br /> <br /> <br /> This little ditty praises the role played by nuddicks as navigational aids for fishermen plying a dangerous trade. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> John Cornick<br /> Halifax, Nova Scotia<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />   Submitted By: John Cornick
