It goes without saying<br /> It had to arrive<br /> A dreaded halt to the fishery<br /> We sure hope we survive<br /> <br /> A world famous fishery<br /> Five hundred years in the making<br /> Has dwindled to nothing <br /> Through poor management and risk taking<br /> <br /> What was to blame, what pray tell?<br /> Foreign fishing, technology, or greed, we ask<br /> But poor management was really the culprit<br /> And we should not take local fisherman to task <br /> <br /> The monitor of stocks depending on Science<br /> That so let us down when sorely needed<br /> A job poorly done, now we have arrived<br /> To this point in time to us unfairly deeded<br /> <br /> The effects on a people so very profound<br /> We can scarce understand from whence the source<br /> Retraining isn't the answer it seems<br /> Stock recovery seems to be the only recourse<br /> <br /> We hope we have learned from this awful disaster <br /> The importance of careful monitoring of stocks <br /> Fisheries revival may very well be in sight<br /> And according to catches, it sure looks off the rocks<br /> <br /> The models used were so out of date<br /> They needed updating so very clear<br /> Lets hope that happens, and we don't have to fear<br /> Another collapse of our fishery so dear<br /> <br /> <br /> A few thoughts about a very tragic episode in the history our dear province of Newfoundland.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> John Cornick<br /> Halifax, Nova Scotia<br /> <br />   Submitted By: John Cornick
