Labrador Fishery
The little schooners of Brigus bold
Sheltered in the bay from cold
Old winter storms that shriek and moan
In mid December's harshest tone
Will, ere the month of March arrive
Show signs of readying to drive
To that far shore where fathers toil
For harvest from the watery soil
For ere full century or more
Along the coast of Labrador
And then in June when weather clears
There'll be the usual round of tears
As husbands, sons, and fathers must
Bid fond adieu to those they trust
To keep all safe till they return
And lights aglow forever burn
In tiny windows viewing foam
To guide the weary sailors home
From far flung places, perilous shore
Along the coast of Labrador
Ten of the sturdiest vessels fine
Manned by the best of seaman line
Depart from Brigus' sheltered shore
And make for open ocean's roar
For Smiths have sent these little craft
So trim and tidy fore and aft
Northward bound to harvest there
The staple of the island fair
For twenty some odd years or more
Along the coast of Labrador
The “Greyhound,” “Ariel” and “Mary E”
And “Sherbrooke” too, so fine to see
“Zepho,” “Coronella,” and “Harvest Home”
Snug little ships well seasoned to foam
Vigilant,” “Peerless” and “Isobel”
Worthy of the ocean's swell
Made up a fleet of vessels ten
That roamed afar where men are men
In search of fish four months or more
Along the coast of Labrador
The voyage home with danger wrought
In late fall storms so often caught
And many a ship and crew went down
From Labrador to Brigus town
Arriving home to open arms
Cheerful families, and maiden's charms
Another season's toil is o'er
With food and clothing safe in store
And prayers for those who'll sail no more
Along the coast of Labrador
