Kelly’s Island
In Conception Bay of ancient fame
Lies Kelly's Island of renown
A mile or so off Kelligrews
Just twenty miles from St. John's town
Offshore majestic there it stood
The island lay just sitting there
A ghost of things of bygone days
Which we might with all others share
We never trod that mystic Isle
But every day our wistful gaze
Would scan its form gainst ashen sky
And oft times through a foggy haze
The legend burned within our mind
Of Peter Easton's pirate gold
Deep down in some dark treasure pit
Ne're to be found so we were told
T’was said the pit lay hidden 'neath
A barachois of length a mile
Inside the western rocky beach
Of that historic sceptered isle
Placed there by pirates years ago
And carefully crafted by design
To flood if ever opened up
And safely lost til end of time
So oft a young child’s dreams take flight
And give full meaning to the phrase
"Of childhood dreams we are composed
And so for that we give God praise"
