In a Pickle on the Shore
It was caplin season near our new home down around the cove. As a “come from away” I was excited to learn all the news things about old ways. I watched and asked questions and the answers mostly made sense, except “pickle.” “Yes maid, a little pickle along the edge of the caplin beach will sometimes draw them in.” My goodness, I thought, I can do that! So down to the beach I went and took my jars. I couldn’t quite see why a little fish like a caplin wanted my pickles, but I was game to try. Did cause a good laugh as I spread the homemade dill pickles and bread and butter pickles and the mustard pickles among the pebbles of the beach. After the laughter, they set me straight. How was I to know “pickle” was also the milky, milty looking liquid in the bottom of a salt beef bucket? As a “come from away,” there is much to love in the lore and the learning. Submitted By: NULL
