House Moving in the Outports


I wonder how many readers remember the old days when houses in the outports were commonly moved through the cooperative efforts of large teams of men. This photo, taken in the community of Twillingate some years ago, shows such a move. Probably the best known example was the move of Hawthorn Cotttage in 1834 some 10 kilometers from its original site to its current location in the centre of Brigus. House moving was especially common between the early 50s and late 60s, during a period of resettlement of many communities around the coast.
