Grey Stone Isle
Grey Stone Isle

Oh Grey Stone Isle of my youth
The one for me most reflecting the truth
The one I love above all others
The one I choose given my druthers

The little boats out in the bay
Gently bobbing on the ocean swell
Bring back fond memories galore
Of grand old times spent on that shore

The rocks and rills encasing the hill
Are purple in the twilight's still
And golden in the setting sun
Where else would I ever choose to run

Than o'er it's beaches wild with foam
And o'er it's combers free to roam
In trap skiff or in dory fair
The greatest solitude meets me there

From Northern Bay to Norman's Bight
Oh what times of pure delight
Or further out to Random Isle
Away from home by many a mile

The granite headlands meet my eye
As round the point I seek to ply
And when offshore a mile or two
I feel alone in solitude

Then looking shore ward there in splendour
Lies the rocky coast of home
Reminding me of my safe harbour
And the need to sail there even harder

With billowing sails at my heels
Only heaven knows how it feels
The wind and water cross my face
Bring quiet moments of redeeming grace

All troubles flee my earthly frame
And leave me free once more again
To mingle with kinfolk spirits there
In solitude on the "grand old mare"

And if a bird should so alight
On my gunwale in a way so sprite
To converse with him would be my aim
With someone I know by his first name

For birds may be for us a twin
The embodiment of our long lost kin
And have a wish with us to converse
Their only need in this universe

But sight of grey stone brings me back
To sudden reality right on track
Back from those dreams of days of yore
On that lovely rocky foam clad shore

I've been away to foreign shores
And travelled many a mile for sure
But a place so comforting I've not been
As those Grey Stone shores I long to be in

If ever I chance to return to that isle
It will for sure cause me to smile
And leave there again I never will
No matter if other places offer a thrill

John Cornick
Halifax, Nova Scotia

Submitted By: John Cornick
