Fish Inspection Lab, 1955
Fish Inspection Lab, 1955

Back in 1955 I worked as a technician with the Federal Dept. of Fisheries Inspection Lab in St. Johns for several years before continuing with my education in university in Ontario. The lab was located on Water St. in Baird's Cove. The lab carried out chemical and bacteriological analyses of samples from fish processing plants. I was attached to the bacteriological section. My duties included bacteriological testing of fish processing plants throughout the province. Because of the remoteness of some of these plants we often travelled by helicopter and Beaver aircraft. Those were interesting times and we had a great group. The photo shows Fred Davis who worked in the Chemistry Section, weighing samples with an analytical balance. Another person I remember working at the lab was Art Johnston, father of the well known author Wayne Johnston. My boss and mentor was Dr. Chesley Blackwood and it is he who I credit for encouraging me to follow my career in bacteriology with the Dept. of Fisheries.

John Cornick
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Submitted By: John Cornick
