Don’t Kick The Bucket
Many Newfoundlanders were noted for having large families and we were one of them. We were a family of 14 and had many chores to do in order to survive in a harsh environment. Our tasks often depended on our age. Some hunted and cut wood while the younger ones caught trout and picked berries, especially partridge berries, raspberries and, my favourite, blueberries. My older sister and I (10 and 12 ) went to our secret blueberry patch one fine summer day and located an area of fat juicy berries. We began picking and my sister sat down when suddenly she screamed and I saw the wasps (hornets as we called them ) swarm around her. She had accidentally put her foot into an old rusty bucket which was covered by the bushes. I lost my chivalry and started to run. I was bigger than my sister and was far ahead of her, only glancing back every now and then to see the hornets around her head while she continued to yell. Nevertheless we arrived home without berries or the containers. Mom saw the welts and treated them with bread soda mixed with a drop of water. My sister wasn't a happy camper and brought it up to me many times in a stinging manner. Even though 60 plus years have passed, she still reminds me of that day when I left her running for her life!
