Come Home
Come Home
Come home Newfoundlanders to the land of your birth
Where the scenery excels anything else on this earth
Such beautiful parks, North, South, East and West
You can rest there a while and picnic at best
Come home Newfoundlanders and enjoy as of yore
The miles of sand whilst you bathe on the shore
Swim and relax and gather some shells
That’s when you’ll wander and rest yourselves
Come home Newfoundlanders and join in the fun
Of meeting old friends and also the young
When you’re all tuckered out and ready to rest
There are modern hotels and motels at their best
Come home Newfoundlanders and enjoy the fruits fine
They are here for the taking, won’t cost you a dime
Raspberries, Strawberries and Blueberries galore
They grow in profusion all over our shores
Come home Newfoundlanders and join in the laughter
You’ll feel much younger for many years after.
Mrs. Harry Cornick nee Ethel Young St. John’s, NL, 1966
The first NL Come Home Year was celebrated in 1966, some 42 years ago, On that occasion my grandmother, Mrs. Harry Cornick (nee Ethel Young) wrote the above poem in celebration of the event. I recently found the poems in her papers and thought I would share it with your readers.
