Clothesline
You can tell a lot about the people
By the clothes that hang on the line
Flapping in the warm summer breeze
Whitening in the bright sunshine.
How many children do they have?
The ages and their gender
Do they have a guest stay there?
Are they heavy set or slender?
A young man’s shirt and pants
And Poppy’s old wool vest
Nanny’s good white apron
A little girl’s frilly dress.
You can see a soldier’s uniform
Hanging proudly on the line
They’ll say farewell to family soon
To fight a war of some kind.
Maternity wear lets us know
There is a little one on its way
Yes you can always tell a story
By the clothing on display.
