Aggie Spracklin House in Brigus
Aggie Spracklin House in Brigus

During WWII my father, Cyril Cornick, worked for the British Ministry of War Transport in St. Johns. NL. The ministry was responsible for provisioning ships in convoy enroute to Europe. Dad had worked as an accountant with Bowring Bros in St. Johns. He had been seconded to work as an accountant with the Ministry by Mr. Eric Bowring of Bowring Bros. who headed up the Ministry office in St Johns. In 1949, after the war had ended, he was given vacation trip up north to Port Hope Simpson, Labrador, on a ship carrying pit props, in recognition of his loyal contribution to the war cause. During that summer while he was away our family moved to Brigus, where father had rented a house owned at that time by a local resident named Aggie Spracklin. He chose Brigus because it was the ancestral home of my Mother’s family the Smiths. The house was a large two story gabled building located on Forge Street, and backing onto the stone walled canal that ran through the town. The house, seen in the photo, has since been purchased and faithfully restored by the new owner. I remember so vividly the good times we spent there and the friends I made. In particular I chummed around with the son of a local merchant, Hiscock & Sons. The old house intrigued me because stored upstairs were old trunks and things containing all sorts of interesting items including old medicines such as Minards Liniment. For a young lad it was all so fascinating. Brigus holds a special place for me and we always visit there when we vacation home in NL.

John Cornick
Halifax, Nova Scotia

Submitted By: John Cornick
