Addiction and the Psyche <br /> <br /> <br /> Why has addiction so long played <br /> An important part and is so almighty<br /> In many families strewn with cases<br /> Of its effects on the human psyche<br /> <br /> Family after family down through the years <br /> Can point to cases of alcohol addiction<br /> And now in this modern age<br /> Drugs are also adding to our afflictions<br /> <br /> Experts today are no further ahead<br /> In defining the definition thereof<br /> We know that substances can be involved<br /> But it can also range from food to love<br /> <br /> Yet we never seem to want to discuss it<br /> It's too embarrassing and we seem smug<br /> Not admitting one's own are dealing with the problem<br /> So the answer is to sweep it under the rug<br /> <br /> This isn't the way to deal with the problem<br /> Nor does it help a cure to appear<br /> It may ease personal pain for the person helping<br /> When the embarrassment affects their social sphere<br /> <br /> But in the end if not corrected<br /> It will come back to haunt families so afflicted<br /> And cause lots of trouble down the road<br /> As by experts so rightly predicted<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> John Cornick<br /> Halifax, Nova Scotia<br /> March 24, 2016<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />   Submitted By: John Cornick
