A Walled Room
A Walled Room
Dedicated to the enduring legacy of the early settlers and the ancient stone walls they left behind. This piece honors the craftsmanship, grit, and artistry of the first migration, whose skilled hands cleared the rugged earth to build the rock walls enclosing the parcels of land we know as “rooms.” Standing strong and free against the elements, these stone foundations remain a beautiful, lasting testament to the resilience of those who first shaped this land.
A Walled Room.
In rooms where seeds and potatoes grow,
Cleared by hard working hands long ago
Let it be known these rooms are not alone,
Each room is separated by walls of stone.
These walls stand majestically, and free,
Their beauty is clear for all to see,
They came across with first migration,
These sturdy seeds of stone Creation.
They marked the lots for the neighbors near,
With a skill brought home from a yesteryear,
From sandstone hills the bounty was found,
To build up a wall on the rugged ground.
They blended in with the landscape’s hue,
As if from the earth they naturally grew,
Ancient and silent, a heritage kept,
While the memory of builders quietly slept.
Each passing year the stones grew high,
Beneath the gaze of the Atlantic sky,
They stood five feet tall, three feet wide,
Built with deep and quiet pride.
No wooden fence could endure the gale,
Where the winds and the salt spray prevail,
But the gray stone stands as a steady guard,
Keeping the harvest safe in the yard.
They blended in with the landscape’s hue,
As if from the earth they naturally grew,
Ancient and silent, a heritage kept,
While the memory of builders quietly slept.
