Dark Waters of Home
Dark Waters of Home

Away you soft seascapes of lovely Nova Scotia
Come the rock coasts of my own Newfoundland
I pine for your beaches and tumultuous waters
So far away, yet in dreams close at hand

Those dreams they still linger of roaming your shorelines
I long for the days of my youth on your coast
Warm embraces of kinfolk, cool mists of the evenings
All clear to my mind, and so easy to toast

Of fog shrouded harbours in the quiet of dawn
Of distant fog horns with a mournful sound
Of the quiet labour of fish in the making
These memories now with me clearly abound

Of the fisher women working in aprons
On bough spread flakes from morning to night
While making fish with lively conversation
Oh what a memory of cherished delight

Of distant sounds of make and break engines
Piercing from afar the cool early dawn
As fishers reach for the remote fishing grounds
Far away from home and their own native bawn

Running daily to fog shrouded beaches
Just at the very crack of dawn
To watch the wriggling silvery capelin
Spawning on the smooth rocky bawn

Out with the fishers at four in the morning
To jig for squid among the high swells
With peering eyes watching each move
For first signs that dreaded sea sickness tells

Then gales of laughter that soon would reach
Tiny ears from across the water so deep
Embarrassing moments for one very young
To make him so very inclined to weep

The days now pass swiftly with duties engaged
But come quiet times for reflection and calm
I need these rare moments my soul to recharge
And some time once more for emotional balm

John Cornick
Halifax, Nova Scotia

Submitted By: John Cornick
