Peter Easton
Peter Easton man of fate
Archpirate of the greatest ilk
A cut-throat knave with five hundred men full score
Held sway in old Conception Bay
For ten full years or more
A brush with love when a princess he rescued
Who wed his mate Gilbert Pike by name
Irish Sheila Nageira to Newfoundland he brought
To end her life in Carbonear
A full century and five it is thought
On end of Spanish War decided
To gather an army of five hundred
He turned to piracy with the utmost skill
To plunder the coast in ten strong ships
His dwelling a great house in Ferryland’s Fox Hill
Then tired of the bloody life
Sought pardon through a kidnap plan
By holding Governor Whitbourne they say
For eleven weeks against his will
On Kelly’s Island in Conception Bay
Amassed a fortune in that time
And finally succeeded in getting a pardon
Retirement to Villefranche to enjoy
And brought respectability of sorts
And title as Marquis de Savoy
His name lives on for folks hereabout
Who know the name so well
And the legend survives of golden stores
Deftly hidden by pirate crews
Along the rugged Newfoundland shores
