Memories of the old London New York and Paris Building
Memories of the old London New York and Paris Building As a child growing up in St John’s in the early 1950s I remember this particular building located at the corner of Water Street and Baird’s Cove. Erected in 1894, it was originally the premises of the firm of James Baird Ltd, a fishery supply and import business. From the mid 20th century, however, it was the home of the London New York and Paris, an up scale department store which finally closed it’s doors in 1982. In July of 1989 it was formally designated an Historic Building (source: The Canadian Register of Historic Places). Our connection to this store was the fact that one of the owners, the Joe Goldstone Family, were old friends of my parents. The building is located right next door to the Bowring Bros premises where my father worked. I seem to remember in 1955 working as a microbiology technician with the Federal Dept of Fisheries Inspection Laboratory, which I believe was located in Bairds Cove just behind the “London”.
