Over a thousand years ago the Norse settlement of Hop (believed to be the settlement excavated near L'Anse aux Meadows) was the sight of the first European birth in the New World. Born between 1004 and 1013, Snorri Thorfinnsson, son of Gudrid Eriksdottir and Thorfinn Karlsefni, lived in one of the longhouses excavated and reconstructed near L'Anse aux Meadows. The settlement was abandoned due to infighting and conflict with the natives. At the ripe old age of three, in a time when ships were little bigger than modern day lifeboats, Snorri sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to Iceland, where he grew up to became one of the leading figures in the establishment of Christianity. The picture shows Snorri just after birth, his mother holding him for the first time, he decides to have his first meal. I called the picture "The First Newfie?" to highlight the fact that settlement in Newfoundland goes back a thousand years, longer than anywhere else in North America.
