Sable Island, Nova Scotia, the “Grave Yard of the Atlantic,” is home to numerous wrecks. In the 1800s it lay directly in the path for many cargo vessels en route from NL to New England, and many were lost there. One notable casualty was the MV “George A Wood,” a 190 ton vessel under command of Captain George Winsor, which went aground there 30 Dec, 1939, 2 miles from the lighthouse. The photo shows the crew of the vessel shortly after grounding. Capt. Winsor is in centre wearing the “quiff” hat.
