Who Knit Ya

Those old Newfie phrases of long ago
Were in frequent use way back then
And one with a lot of character was
Who knit ya often asked by Uncle Ben?

The meaning then was really quite clear
A colourful term to be sure
It meant who are your parents
And twas commonly heard up along the shore

But today we hear them no more it seems
The younger generation has moved on to new phrases
But still a few they do persist
And when used they cause bewildering gazes

Ow is she cutting, me cocky
Best kind, by, ole man
Whatta yat now skipper
And please pass the Old Sam

Put the side back in ‘er
Gwan now I pray
What odds, you’re some crooked
You mind now I say

A few are still heard
The dialect dies hard
Of that we are thankful
By the liftin lard

John Cornick
Halifax, Nova Scotia

Submitted By: John Cornick
