Where Spout Cove Used To Be
This letter is regarding the poem "Where Spout Cove Used To Be." I am enclosing a copy of this poem as it was originally written by my uncle Leo King (now deceased) of 3 Rankin Street, St John's. When I was home on vacation in 1992, we talked about this poem, and he said the one that had been printed in "The Compass" about 20 years prior was not as he had written it, and he proceeded to give me the correct copy I have enclosed. Just thought this might be of interest to you since this appears to be a very popular poem, especially for those who live in and around Spout Cove. Where Spout Cove Used To Be By Leo King On a lovely summer evening when I did take a stroll, Down on the point toward the beach to see the waters roll, I sat down on the grassy bank and gazed out over the sea, When my eyes they wondered upon the shore, where Spout Cove used to be Fond memories come back to me when I was just a boy, Of that little place called Spout Cove, filled with love and joy. Of children all with rosy cheeks, as they laughed and played with glee, When after school they all would meet, where Spout Cove used to be Now Spout Cove then was not my home, but St. John's far away, My friends they were the Tricketts, and some named Kelloway. But they have gone and left there now, to them it's a memory That little place where once they dwelt, where Spout Cove used to be I remember Eli Trickett then, who lived upon the hill. And often times when I passed by, I stopped to chat with him, And when you wanted your horses shod, he was the man to see, For he had a forge down on the road, where Spout Cove used to be I remember in the month of June, when fishermen began, To build their box and mend their nets for the caplin rolling in, And many a night as I stood by, it was a sight to see, As they casted for caplin on the beach, where Spout Cove used to be The place is quiet and empty now, since all have moved away. To different parts of Newfoundland and some to the USA, But now and then they return, to that little place to see, That little place dear to their hearts, where Spout Cove used to be Now from the road down by the bridge, a graveyard can be seen, A little plot upon the hill, so peaceful and serene. There lies the souls of loved ones gone, who once did toil the sea, And lived with pride and happiness, where Spout Cove used to be Submitted By: NULL
