"In the early 50s I went home for a visit to my parents in St. John`s & while there a girl friend and I went to her brothers night club just out of the city, she & I had been friends since we were teens,(she is of middle eastern ancestory),while we were sitting there two young GIs entered & seeing us asked if they could buy us a drink & sit with us,(being true Newfies never turn down a freebie) we said yes & we chatted for a few minutes & one of them asks me my ancestor. Me with my light reddish brown hair & freckles I answered English & probably Irish,then he asked my friend her ancestory--she anwered I`m I almost fell off my chair, there was a dead silence & the young men made a speedy retreat. My friend with the lovely Mona Lisa face blue black hair & those lovely Arabic eyes looked at me & said Phyl what did I just say,I told her & she asked what does it mean, when I told her all she could say was JESUS MARY & JOSEPH. I wont tell her name as she still lives in St.John`s. she is a widow now so am I, I am going to try & get back to St.John`s next summer & visit with my Best Friend. we still talk to each other about every other month & still laugh about something that happened 51yrs.ago. the age of innocence! - Phyllis Shaw (Originally from St. John's) "   Submitted By: NULL
