When Nanny Was Naughty

When Nanny Was Naughty

Did you know that Nanny was ever naughty? Well, many years ago when your Nanny was around ten or eleven, she did something really naughty. When we were in elementary school, we had to walk to and from the school, both morning and afternoon, maybe a ten minute walk. During winter we sometimes walked a different route, on the harbour ice. In spring this ice became unsafe; with the warmer days, it would start to melt. Our mom and dad would tell us when the ice was unsafe, and warn us not to go on the ice anymore. One spring day after finishing our lunch, my sister Rose and I ran to catch up with some of our cousins who were heading back to school. This day they had decided to go back across the ice, and wanted us to join them. Though I knew we were not allowed to go this was, I still talked my sister into going with them. We made it past one big gap in the ice, then we were close to the shore on the other side. Some of the kids were already jumping ashore. The piece of ice myself, Rose, and our cousin Hazel were standing on started to move away from the shore. The gap was now too large for us to jump. The ice we were on was floating off. We got really scared, Rose and Hazel started to cry, and I began shouting for help. On the other shore near our house, our dad heard us, and he and uncle Mark, Hazel's dad, were hurrying towards us carrying long sticks. They humped onto the piece of ice with us and used the sticks to push it closer to the main ice. Once they got us on the main ice, they ordered us back towards the road and school. It was clear they were upset with us for putting ourselves in such danger. We could have drifted much further out the bay. Being the oldest, I was reprimanded for disobeying the rules and putting us in danger. As we headed up the road to school, my dad shouted out that there would be punishment waiting when we got home. Needless to say I worried all afternoon, and walked slowly home from school. The only punishment I got was a stern talking to, about the dangers of what we did and what may have happened if they hadn't heard our shouts. Parents worry about their children, and do all they can to keep them safe. So you, my precious grandchildren, remember to always pay attention to what Mommy and Daddy tell you. They love you and always have your best interests in their hearts. Be sure to obey their rules, they know what is best for you. Don't take chances and behave naughty like Nanny did.
