This poem "We Regret to Inform You" was written by my father, Jeremiah G. O'Grady, in August 1970. He passed away on Valentine's Day 2010, very fitting for a man who had the kindest heart. Throughout his life, Dad wrote several poems and left his family with four handwritten books of his poetry. I thought this poem, "We Regret to Inform You" would be very fitting given the more recent deaths of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, and others of course, in Afghanistan. WE REGRET TO INFORM YOU by J. G. OÂ’Grady August 19, 1970 "We regret to inform you" The telegram said, And she felt paralyzed From the shock She bid him farewell, Not too long ago, As his ship pulled away From the dock. When he was just a boy He had many a thought Of a rolling dock and the sea, The sight of a ship, A wind-filled sail Convinced him a sailor to be. Now she read the telegram, The tears came and came again Although time would heal Her broken heart Her boy would not return again. "We regret to inform you," Has come to many a home To break the heart of a man Or wife, War is cruel, without compassion, There's no regard for life.
