Villie Maire Station

Villie Maire Station

Picture of my sister Bonnie, my brother Harold and myself, Walter. Taken at Villie Maire Railway Station near Freshwater, Placentia Bay when it was being built in the early 1960s. My father Harold Fillier managed the station until 1968 or 1969. As kids we spent most of our time at the station with Dad and have many memories of the trains coming and going. The track going to Argentia and Dunville was our playground. One time in the winter we were playing follow the leader on a frozen brook just down the track toward Argentia and on the way back I was leading, apparently my sister slipped and bumped my brother, which in turn bumped me and I went sprawling across the ice. The ice broke and I fell through; I still remember seeing the rocks on the bottom. I managed to turn myself upward splashing and trying to get a grip on anything near. My brother and sister were still on the ice rolling in laughter and didn't have a clue to try and help. I managed to get out and on the long walk back to the station they keep telling me not to tell Dad. It was a pretty cold day and as we walked I was getting stiffer by the minute as everything I had on started to freeze. When we got to the station they snuck me over behind the oil stove hoping dad wouldn't notice me. But after 1/2 hour or so he did and they got in trouble for doing so. I was the Baby so I was always innocent except for the few times I got caught, but even then the punishment wasn't as severe as they would get. Guess where they were older they shoud've had more common sense than me. We were always up to something and I usually got the tail-end like the time we were up on the porch roof on back of the house. They jumped but I was nervous and didn't want to so they put a blanket on the ground to break my fall but I wasn't biting, so they pondered a bit then all of a sudden they yelled out "Mom's coming!" Well that was it! I didn't even think - just jumped. What was worst: to jump or to have Mother catch you on the roof?Needless to say that blanket didn't do much to cushion the fall and I had a limp for a week or so. Oh ya Mother wasn't coming either.
