Twenty Fourth of May Excursions in the Forties Twenty fourth of May was a popular holiday in NL back in the 1940s, and still remains so today. The folks in St. John’s took advantage of the holiday to go fishing, as well as go on excursions to the surrounding countryside. This interesting picture, taken on 24 May, 1940, shows my Father-In-Law Ernest Shute, with his uncle Mr Robert Avery (left) and his son Gordon Shute (right), on such an excursion.. Note the vehicle. Mr Shute was proprietor of a plastering business in St. Johns at the time. Mr Avery was at one time the oldest taxi driver in St Johns, remarkably still driving at the ripe old age of 100.
