Turning 40 and a G.E.D!
Not much of a Story here.Short and Sweet.
I have to credit my Late Brother In -Law Rick for getting me on to doing my G.E.DĀ Exam.
Rick grew up in New Brunswick and was a Chief Warrant Officer in the Air Force
worked in Construction Engineering.
Rick suggested I just go and take the Exam and if I failed I could just repeat it later.
I have never been tested for a learning disability.I have a poor track record with not passing Exams.
If you gave me a Quiz with ten questions and told me the answers before the test.I would probably
get four right.Even though I have always had a great memory.Just not in a Classroom.
It also held me back in my Military Career.I seemed to be on a Crash Course with Academics.
When someone asked what I studied at School.I would foolishly reply in one word.”Failure”
Just quoted myself. It was very hard on my Self Esteem. My wife is very supportiveĀ which means a lot.
Something really have to interest me before I will notice.Lola recently bought a couple of Cross Word Puzzles about music.Don’t like those things.Yes,But you know music. Not in a Cross Word.
I got off track here.
Took Brother Ricks advice and spoke with my Divisional Officer in the Navy,He was my Supervisor.
Not only did he set it up for me.He came in on his day Off to supervise me taking the Exam.Well I failed the English part.
Who would have guessed.Couple years later when I was posted in Ottawa I took an English Course to help me prep for retaking the Exam.First I went to see a Administration Air Force Captain and he tore my Essay apart because of all the Punctuation mistakes. He sent me to a Civilian Teacher who was teaching a English Class at the College. Not related to her.Turns out she had the same Maiden name as my Mom Kennedy. Her Grandfather was also Jim Kennedy like mine.
She was impressed with my way of writing a Story. As a last resort she said if you don’t remember punctuation.Better to leave it out then put it in the wrong Place. She practiced with us when to hear for a comma or exclamation or period.I connected with her like a long lost Cousin.Anyhow I wrote the English test and I passed.Later on when applying for a Security job when I retired from the Military they asked to see my Grade Twelve Certificate and it helped me secure a job.I used to tell my friends I graduated High School at 40.Sure,Janey Mac I’m nearly 40.
