Travels Through NL

I just finished reading an interesting book about travels through Newfoundland & Labrador entitled “Theatre of Fish” by John Gimlette. (Reference: “Theatre of Fish,” John Gimlette, Hutchinson, 365 p. 2005). The author, traces the steps of his great-grandfather, Dr Eliot Curwen, who spent the summer in Newfoundland & Labrador in 1893 with the Dr. Wilfred Grenfell Mission. Gimlette’s connection to the Grenfells was through the school he atended in England, “Mostyn House,” which was established by Wilfred’s father, Algernon. On review, the book has gained less than glowing acclaim. One reviewer, Louisa Wagh of The Guardian says, “Like the reek of rotten fish his arrogance pervades the whole story, and ruined the rest of the book for me.” Another reviewer, Chris Handyside, in Metro Time Book Review, claimed the author suffered from “writerly narcissism.” Criticisms aside, for me it was an interesting read about places in a homeland dear to me.   Submitted By: John Cornick
