Trading Sheep’s Wool for Blankets.
In the Early Sixties my Parents used to have Lambs.
New Lambs we called Ewes would be born around February month
It was exciting for us kids to go out to the Stable and see the new Lambs.
White ones mostly and sometimes Brown and even Black ones.
Sometimes a Sheep would not take to her Lamb and Father would match her up
with another Sheep or else feed it from a Baby’s Bottle.Uncle Ben and Vince
next door had lambs as well.We would go visit their Stable and Check out
the Newbies. One time I mooched and stayed home from School and I saw a Sheep
Give birth to a Lamb out in the Meadow,That was my awakening to the Birds and Bees
and where baby lambs came from.
In Winter time Father always killed a lamb for Christmas. The leftovers Mother would
Pickle and Salted Lamb is very tasty.Mom also made Blood Puddings from the Lamb’s Blood.
It was very tasty indeed.Either fried or eaten raw. When home on a visit I like to Buy some
at Bidgood’s and have with my Breakfast.
Father sheared the Sheep in Summer.Mother would take care to spread it outside and dry it in the Sun.
I remember seeing Women in neighbouring St Shott’s dry the Wool down on the Beach by the Bay.
Mom would pack up the Wool and send it off to New Brunswick and She would receive Woolen Blankets. The Army called them Fire Blankets.A few Balls of yarn to knit socks,Caps,Mittens
and Sweaters,It was a form of trade without any money exchanged.Hard working people they were back then.Nothing like a few woolen blankets on an old feather bed to keep you warm at Night,
