Torpedoing of the Helen Forsey
Dear Editor: The following request is in response to a letter to the editor in January and April 2010, issues entitled "The Sherman Zwicker Project." It was really a pleasure to finally see an article or anything about Grand Bank. I left Grand Bank in July 1948, moved to Toronto and now live in Calgary - I have never forgotten where I came from and love reading about Grand Bank or any town in Fortune Bay. Here in Calgary I meet many from the Maritimes and also have a visit about back home. We still stand out in the crowd because of a little accent. My brother Tom and I have talked about this article but we can't remember this schooner, Sherman Zwicker. She certainly wasn't around Grand Bank in our time. Why is it so important as to where this schooner should be placed? My brother, Leslie James Rogers, was killed in September 1942 on his way back from the Barbados on the schooner Helen Forsey. Helen Forsey was owned by the merchant family of Forsey's. I think the owners' names were Sam and Curtis Forsey. Ches Forsey of this family was no longer involved with the firm. He lost his life on the Rio - I think that was the schooner's name. He was the captain; three other Grand Bankers were drowned with him. To get back to the Helen Forsey, two young men lost their lives senselessly. Beside my brother Leslie, Arthur Bond from Frenchman's Cove lost his life. There was certainly nothing done by Grand Bankers or the merchants involved to remember these two young men. Grand Bank didn't have a museum then, but I am just wondering, since a museum is now there, is there any mention of the Helen Forsey, torpedoed by the Germans? The death of these two young men was indeed a sad time, because four older men returned, including the captain, Jack Ralph. Many years after my parents moved to Toronto, an article in the St. John's Telegram was sent to my brother. This article gave the name of the captain and number of the U-Boat responsible for my brother's death, Artur Bond's death and the sinking of the Helen Forsey. I would be interested to know what Stoodley family Les Stoodley belongs to. I went to school with a Tom Stoodley. I feel much better since I put on paper what September 19th, 1942 did to my young life then and my parents, Louis and Dinah Rogers. Respectfully, Ella O'Donnell Nee Rogers Submitted By: NULL
