Tilting to Toronto
My name is Gwen Dwyer, wife of Peter Dwyer, who was born in Tilting, NL. I recently received my first edition of your very interesting magazine. I am a native of Montreal, and lived there all my life. We were married in 1957 and have one daughter and four sons. We moved here to Burlington, Ontario after Peter retired in 1991. As of the past few years, we spend our summers in Tilting, and this year we will take part in a celebration of the twentieth anniversary of Come-Home Year & since it has recently been declared a National Heritage District, we are looking forward to a great celebration. My husband and I have a great love for Tilting, and though I was not born there, I feel as strongly about the place as Peter does. Nowhere have I found friendlier people. Peter writes poems as a pastime and recently composed this one, which I thought you may be interested in.
Tilting to Toronto
By Peter Dwyer
If Heaven shall be my final home
With choirs of angels lilting
And cherubs singing all day long
I'll still look back to Tilting.
Where else on earth could a young boy grow
So happy and contented,
For the tax man never grabbed the tax,
And our homes were never rented.
Alas! Alas! The wanderlust encouraged us to roam.
To search for wealth in foreign climes,
Far, far away from home.
We wandered on in hopes to find
A place we could belong to,
In St. John's, Boston, Montreal
We tried to skip, Toronto.
But Toronto is far better than the towns of Uncle Sammy
They'll rob you so much faster
Down in Cleveland or Miami.
The CN Tower is a wondrous sight
As it reaches for the sky
But you'd better wear your money belt
Or you'll kiss your cash goodbye.
The Skydome is so pleasant
On a sunny summer afternoon
And if the Blue Jays win the game
We will start again believing.
Believing that there is no Jinx
Toronto's teams can win
And maybe on some far off night
The Leafs will win again.
If fans would only keep the faith
And prayers are offered up
The gods could smile from up on high
And give them a Stanley Cup.
Toronto is oh, so far away
As I sit on Lighthouse Hill
And watch the windcaps in the bight
And feel a pleasant thrill of a beautiful
Sou-Wester as it blows past yonder hill.
Then I wonder why I left this place of
Friendship, love and care.
WELL! The weather is so much better
Just about anywhere.
We travel the whole world over,
And no matter where we roam.
The place that is written on our hearts,
Is TILTING, Home Sweet Home.
