Through My Eyes
I have been reading your Downhomes for years and enjoy them very much.
Through My Eyes
By Bonnie Farcy
I worked so hard all of my life,
I had a nice home, children and a wife.
The kids have grown, they all moved away,
The love of my life, she's been gone a year today.
Something is changing, I feel it inside,
I'm losing my memory, and many things I now hide.
A new journey has begun, as I stand here all alone,
Every day you tell me, this is my new home.
It consists of one room, and many closed doors,
I do have a roommate, someone I've never seen before.
You don't know my history, you don't know what I like,
If you really want to figure me out, ask some questions of my life.
Another new day, I find the time very long,
Sometimes my mind will remember a song.
When living here from day to day, so many are all the same,
When your day is done, you all go home,
Behind this gate I must remain.
When living life as I now do, you can really understand,
Many times through life you've heard it said - "Twice a child but once a man."
Eating, dressing or fixing my hair, simple tasks I used to do,
I no longer can, forgive me my friend,
For now I need help from you.
What am I eating? You didn't really say,
No I don't want it, please just take it away.
You seem to be in a hurry, please allow me some time,
Yet sometimes I wonder, do you care what's on my mind?
Confusion is what I feel, when I'm looking at you all,
Give me space, just let me go, I need to walk the hall.
Today I walked well, I really was on the ball,
Tomorrow may be different, I might be afraid that I may fall.
I see that you're looking, I feel that you care,
Sometimes I know you wonder, what's behind this blank empty stare.
I still feel emotions, each and every day,
I want to respond, but that's all been taken away.
Such feelings I have, each night when I close my eyes,
I have to ask - Dear Lord above, "Why am I even alive?"
Please don't talk behind me, you think maybe I can't hear,
But the hurt in my eyes, just like yours, When released it turns to tears.
Oh I know too, I'm not the person I used to be,
Each time I lash out in anger, it's just a part of my disease.
My children struggle, I see the pain on their face,
Oh Lord how I pray, they never get to this place.
Love is what I need, a kiss, a hug or two,
That's what I would give, if I was in your shoes.
Cherish life my friend, enjoy it while you can,
I never thought my journey, this way it would end.
This disease could be inflicted on any one of you,
Only then will you know, how it feels to walk in my shoes.
Fame and fortune mean nothing at all,
When one day you're faced with looking down this one hall,
I know God is talking, yes I'm getting the call.
I've wished this many days, when I'm scared and all alone,
My prayers are being answered, today God's taking me home.
