Three Generations Sailed with Captain Bob Bartlett
My great-grandfather, the late Capt. Thomas Gushue, was the First Mate reporting to Capt. Bob Bartlett on the SS Roosevelt. He accompanied Admiral Robert E. Peary on his famous voyage, being the first to reach the North Pole on April 6th, 1909. He also sailed as Boatswain on Capt. Bob's schooner, the Effie M. Morrissey.
My grandfather, the late Leonard A. Gushue, joined Capt. Bob in 1931 as Chief Engineer on the Effie M. Morrissey. He went on many Arctic expeditions with the famous Captain.
My father, the late Bart Gushue, joined Capt. Bob in 1932, as Asst. Engineer on the Morrissey. He sailed North with Bob on 11 Arctic expeditions.
All three generations were from Brigus, NL.
