The Word Newfie
Dear Mr. Smith; I always read your column and enjoy it very much. In the September issue of Downhome in your column, I saw the word Newfie. It stirred something in my soul and took me back to 1945, when I was a young girl going to Canada to work. Arriving in North Sydney and going through customs, being asked many questions, that was scary enough. But to be told if you cause any problems while in Canada, back to Newfie you will go? That word did not sit will with me, and with my Granny’s temper, I told the immigration officer, “I don’t like being called a Newfie. I, sir, am a Newfoundlander and very proud of it.” No one has ever called me a Newfie since. I have been in Canada since 1945 and have been a good and hardworking citizen, never needing welfare or unemployment. I love Newfoundland, my home. Like they say, you can take the girl out of the bay, but you cannot take the bay out of the girl. Keep writing your great column. Teresa M.
