The Waterwitch Tragedy

The Waterwitch Tragedy

Throughly enjoy every issue of Downhome. There are not too many areas of Canada that have the many stories of heroism and tragedy that Newfoundlanders share. In my research of family history I have come across many. One was the Saga of the Waterwitch that ran aground in a driving snow storm on the night of November 29th, 1875 at Horrid Gulch near Pouch Cove. Having visited the exact spot, I have never been able to fiqure out how Capt. Sam Spracklin and his son climbed that steep cliff in the middle of the night during a fierce winter storm, to waken the citizens of Pouch Cove to get help for the survivors clinging to the rocks below. I put together a collection of the articles and documents, as well as photos of the area that I could find - primarily for my family, but have also shared a copy with the Cupids Historical Society. Several of the victims were buried there (some in an unmarked grave) during the first service ever conducted at the United Church in Cupids. The church was still under construction and not quite finished when the need for the funeral service arose. I am attaching a photo of the cover, as well as a couple of pages from my article. The museum at Cupids has a full copy. Feel free to use whatever portions of it you wish, and I'm hoping your publication can lend some support to the efforts of the Cupids Historical Society. Thank you, Doug Harvey - London, Ontario I have kept in touch with that group and have just learned that they are undertaking a project to have a monument erected to the victims of the Waterwitch tragedy.   Submitted By: Doug Harvey
